Game #108 Trade deadline ended; Only trade was Candelario

The Washington Nationals made no trades today. The trade deadline came and went with only Jeimer Candelario traded yesterday. The fans are split in how they feel about the lack of action. Basically you either trust your general manager to make the best deals for the team -or- you don’t. Rizzo had plenty of offers to consider — but in the end the only one he took was the Candelario deal.

“Those are two guys (Lane Thomas and Kyle Finnegan) that we feel very good about. We’re very high on both of them. They’re good players, but more importantly they’re great guys in the clubhouse. They’ve both become leaders in the clubhouse. When you’re building a young foundation like we are here, you’ve got to sprinkle in some good, veteran players, and those two guys are good players. It never reached the bar we set for each player.”

— Mike Rizzo said at a pre-game presser

This morning we sourced a report that basically set the expectations that Thomas and Finnegan were most likely not going to be traded. As Rizzo said, the offers never reached the bar they set for each player.

The Nats played a player short last night, and Jake Alu was called up to take the roster spot vacated by Candelario. With an open 40-man spot, the Nats made a waive claim for Marlins’ lefty Robert Garcia.

“I hope [Thomas and Finnegan] see it that way, because they’re a huge part of our success. Both of those guys. They’ve been so good for us.

— manager Dave Martinez said

The Nats starting pitchers have a combined ERA of 4.64 for 20th best in MLB.

Here is how they rank:

No. 5 Starter: Patrick Corbin 5.07
No. 4 Starter: Jake Irvin 4.86
No. 3 Starter: Trevor Williams 4.72
No. 2 Starter: MacKenzie Gore 4.42
No. 1 Starter: Josiah Gray 3.27
