Alu and Gushue Steal the Show in Tuesday’s MiLB Recap and Darren Baker with a walk-off!

It’s Tuesday, and that means the minor league affiliates started a new series. The FredNats are on the road in Lynchburg to take on the Hillcats. Wilmington is hosting the Bowling Green Hot Rods with Mitchell Parker on the bump to start the series off. The Harrisburg Senators are away for the week and they’ll go up against the Bowie Baysox. And lasty, the Wings are home for the second week in a row and they’ll butt heads with the Scranton Wilkes-Barre RailRiders till Sunday.

Class-A Fredericksburg “FredNats” Nationals

Unfortunately, there was enough rain in Lynchburg tonight to postpone the game. It will be made up on Thursday, May 5th. Notable that T.J. White was back in the lineup after several days off to rest his leg, and Brady House was not in Tuesday’s lineup — but the rain-out made it a moot point.

High-A Wilmington Blue Rocks

Hard-throwing southpaw, Mitchell Parker, was on the mound for the Blue Rocks and he did what he does. Parker went five strong innings allowing one run via a solo shot in the 3rd inning. His ERA is down to 2.01 for the year. Malvin Pena relieved Parker in the 6th and struck out the side while working around a walk. Following the inning from Pena, the Wilmington offense finally woke up. Yasel Antuna got it started with a walk and stolen base, then Israel Pineda followed him up with a single. With runners on first and third, Omar Meregildo hit a double to tie the game and set the stage for Drew Mendoza. He kept it rolling and took the lead with a single up the middle, Blue Rocks up one heading into the 7th. The Bowling Green hitters promptly responded with a run of their own to tie it up and it would stay tied until extra-innings. In the bottom of the 10th, Cole Daily, the extra-inning ghost runner, advanced to third on a passed ball, then Darren Baker walked it off with a sacrifice fly. Rocks win 3-2, and Baker accomplished this on the same night that his father, Dusty Baker, notched his 2,000th career win as a manager.

Double-A Harrisburg Senators

Orioles’ top prospect, Adley Rutschman, was the talk of the town as he made his Double-A debut while he continues to rehab a triceps injury. However, Adley picked the wrong day for a call-up because Jake Alu and Taylor Gushue stole the show. Alu went 2-5 with a homer, double, and three RBI to bring his average up to .288. To one-up his teammate, Gushue would go for a pair of homers including the go-ahead in the top of the 8th. The Senators ultimately scored six against the Baysox, beating them 6-5.

Triple-A Rochester Red Wings

I hope you love some good pitching because we had a combined shutout in Rochester. Jefry Rodriguez went 5 1/3 innings of three hit ball for his best start of the season and the bullpen did the rest. Francisco Perez, Tyler Clippard, Jordan Weems, and Carl Edwards Jr. combined for eight strikeouts in their 3 2/3 while walking one and yielding two hits, and no runs.  A masterful performance from an otherwise struggling Rochester bullpen. The offense needed the stellar pitching as they could only scratch two across. In the 1st, Joey Meneses got jammed, but managed to muscle an RBI double down the right field line, then Nick Banks extended the lead in the 4th with a home run to dead center. Wings win 2-0.

Farm System final notes 🎶

The Nats’ minor league system had a good start to the week with some exceptional pitching outings and a few big-time performances at the plate.
