Game #27 Robbie Ray, the former Nats farmhand starts for the D’Backs; Gio Gonzalez for the Nats

There was that time when Gio Gonzalez was considered a hard-throwing lefty, and this new crop of lefty fireballers includes Robbie Ray. This is only the 2nd lefty the Nats have faced this year of the 27 starters in 2017 which is an unusually small percentage.

Robbie Ray at one-time was a promising young Nats farmhand at Harrisburg and then he was traded in the Doug Fister deal to Detroit. The Tigers traded Ray to the Diamondbacks in a 3-team trade with the Yankees.

As we have seen, Ray comes out firing in the early innings and stamina and mistake pitches sometimes get him. He has looked better this season, but April stats don’t always tell the full story.

Here is what the Nats have done against Robbie Ray in the past:

The Nationals must get back to their winning ways as they have now dropped 3 of their last 4 games in this homestand. It was bad news yesterday when Matt Wieters had to be scratched with an illness. We await the word on how Wieters is feeling today.

Ryan Zimmerman took home the NL Player of the Week honors on Monday, and today was named the NL Player of the Month for April edging out teammate Bryce Harper. Congratulations to Ryan Zimmerman!
