A Houdini Act by Ollie, A HR by the Buffalo and the biggest gaffe of the year by MAT

The ineptitude just got to a whole new level. Michael Taylor just allowed a Puig single to turn into a 3 base error for a walk-off Little League HR.

Joe Ross was cruising and like he often does falters late in the game. Sure enough Grandal singled, Puig singled and A.J. Ellis bunted them over to 3rd and 2nd. Dusty Baker pulled Joe Ross with 1 out and brought in Oliver Perez who had to face a righty pinch-hitter in Enrique Hernandez and struck him out on 3 pitches. The next batter was Corey Seager who he got to fly out to get the Nats out of trouble and keep the game knotted at 2-2. The game would remain tied into the 8th inning with 2 outs as Wilson Ramos came to bat.

Pedro Baez the hard throwing righty came in to face Wilson Ramos, and the Buffalo smashed a HR to deep leftfield to put the Nats up 3-2.

In the 9th, the Nats had bases loaded for some add-on runs but couldn’t come through as Bryce Harper harmlessly grounded out.  Michael Taylor struck out for the 5th time in the game with no contact. Taylor carried his issues into the field and allowed Puig’s single to roll under his glove to score Kendrick around from 1st base as the tying run and Puig ran through the stop sign and scored the Little League style HR for the Dodger’s walk-off win 4-3.

The Nats losing streak is now at 5 games. What does Rizzo and Baker do now?

boxscore 6 23 16

All of this on Dusty Baker Bobblehead night, and the Dodgers honered Dusty Baker who caught the ceremonial 1st pitch from his old Dodger teammate Tommy Davis.

To quote the great Vin Scully as Yasiel Puig was scoring and the camera focuses on Taylor, “Michael Taylor who struck out 5 times has the error that KILLS Washington.”

Game #73 Line-up order change. The youngsters tonight in Joe Ross and Urias: Game Thread

The Nats are now in a 4 game losing streak and must win tonight for a happy plane flight to Milwaukee and the day-off tomorrow. Julio Urias does not turn 20 years old until August, and he will face Joe Ross who just turned 23 years old a few weeks ago. Dusty Baker has in fact shuffled his batting order in the #5 and #6 spots by moving Wilson Ramos up to the #5 and Ryan Zimmerman to the #6.

Urias has already made 5 starts and threw a 5 inning shutout against the Brewers. Urias of course has not faced any Nationals players which only gives us our scouting report on him. His reportoire consists of a 4-seamer at 94mph, a curveball at 77, a slider at 88 and a changeup. Urias mixes up his pitches well, and his issue is hitting his spots and repeating his delivery. Righties are slashing .306/.358/.484/.842 against Urias. Expect only 2 left-handed batters in the starting line-up today.

Here is Joe Ross’ stats against the Dodgers:

Baseball is a cruel game. Roark had a 7 inning gem…spoiled: Postgame

Tanner Roark took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the 8th inning, and Roark looked fantastic for the first 7 inning. Then it started to unravel and nothing seemed to work for him in the 8th inning. He walked the lead-off man Joc Pederson on a 3-2 pitch that was so on the edge (see chart below) and could have been called strike 3 and probably should have been strike 3. Then Puig lined a ball off of Espinosa’s glove for a single, and then Yasmani Grandal smoked a 3-run HR to win the game in a 2 strike count.

The Nationals squandered chances on-base all night long, and had a chance to widen the lead several times. This loss extends this losing streak to 4 games for the Nationals.

This is the chart that walked Pederson to start the 8th inning:
roark to pederson 6 21 16

Bryce Harper and Danny Espinosa supplied the runs via solo home runs, but the team was 1-10 with RISP and the only hit came from Tanner Roark where Ramos was thrown out at the plate.
boxscore 6 22 16

Dusty Baker is the manager and the question was do you pull Tanner in the first sign of trouble? In the top of the 8th with 1 out and Ramos on 2nd base, do you pinch-run for him?

Dave Roberts had his pitcher Kazmir intentionally walk Daniel Murphy to load the bases to pitch to Ryan Zimmerman. Zimmerman struck out and is now 0-9 this season with bases loaded with 4 strikeouts.

Game #72 Tanner Roark needs to be the stopper in LA + Draft Pick Updates: Game Thread

The last 3 games have to be put behind us, and on to what we have now with Tanner Roark for the Nats, and the Dodgers will pitch lefty Scott Kazmir tonight. Yasiel Puig is set to come off of the DL tonight.

The Nationals have actually moved up to 6th in NL OPS putting the team on the top half of the league. The home runs have certainly helped, and Danny Espinosa and Michael Taylor are both trending up.

Vin Scully was disappointed. Yusmeiro Petit qualifies for a quality start and saves the ‘pen: Postgame

Pitching ace Clayton Kershaw went 7 innings and gave up 1 run while Yusmeiro Petit went 6 innings and gave up 3 runs in this game that was billed as the match-up of the season originally scheduled with Kershaw and Stephen Strasburg who was scratched shortly before 1st pitch.

This game never felt close for the first 6 innings as Kershaw loves working with a lead, even if it is just 1 run and Kershaw had a 3 run lead, but Kershaw got in trouble in the 7th inning and the Nationals could only score 1 run.

The Nationals actually had 6 hits off of Kershaw, and Chris Heisey was at-bat with the tying runs on 3rd and 2nd base with 2 outs and he could not deliver.

The Nationals did battle against the best pitcher in the universe which is all you can ask for. Michael Taylor extended his ‘starter’ hitting streak to 18 straight games. In fact all Nationals starters including Petit had hits in this game except for Ryan Zimmerman and Danny Espinosa. In fact, it was actually Yusmeiro Petit who broke up the no-hitter of Kershaw in the 3rd inning. Most would agree that Kershaw did not look his sharpest as he had several 3 ball counts including a 3-0 count where Wilson Ramos was in swing-mode and singled off of him. In typical Kershaw style, he bent but did not break. He issued no walks, 6 hits, and only the 1 earned run while pitching out of trouble.

As for Strasburg’s health, he said he felt a pinch in his upper back while lifting weights on Saturday in San Diego. Strasburg was receiving treatment and taking medications, and it did not feel 100% near game time when Strasburg decided it was best to not repeat the mistakes of last year and pitch when not near 100% healthy. “When the meds didn’t really seem to help much … I was like, it’s just not worth the risk,” Strasburg said. “[Petit] did a great job out there. I was trying to make the right decision — didn’t want to go out there and go a couple innings and feel like I couldn’t go any longer and have him come out of the bullpen. So at least we were able to make a decision before the start of the game so he could get ready properly.” Continue reading

UPDATED: Strasburg Scratched Game #71 : Game Thread

Tonight is one of those nights where you watch this Dodgers/Nationals game even if you are not a fan of either team just to see this pitching match-up that looks like names you would see in Game 1 of a playoff game. Clayton Kershaw is having another Cy Young type of season with a 1.58 ERA and Stephen Strasburg has been just as good at times. This will certainly be the best pitcher Strasburg has gone up against this year. Strasburg has a 10-0 record and Kershaw is 10-1.  Stephen Strasburg has been scratched from tonight’s start and replaced by Yusmeiro Petit. It’s been reported that Strasburg has an upper back strain.

The weather is hot right now in Los Angeles with temperatures currently at 95° and heading to near 100º.  Temperatures at first pitch should drop a few degrees and then by sundown back in the 80’s. The ball should carry early in the game.

The only way it seems to beat Kershaw is with home runs and some creative “small ball”. Kershaw has created jams for himself and then seemingly does a Houdini act to get out of them. Stephen Strasburg has the ability to pitch as good as Kershaw as the Dodgers offense has been struggling.

MASN files more Motions vs MLB and the Nats

In case you missed it, the paperwork and accusations are flying again in this MASN dispute. Lots of new cross motions being filed between MASN, MLB, and the Nationals over the past few weeks. An already bitter fight between the Lerners and Angelos now has MASN repeatedly attacking MLB and Commissioner Manfred in new filings posted Friday night.

Joseph Shenker, who is MLB’s lead attorney, wrote in a May 27th letter to the other attorneys in the case that “absent a judicial order preventing MLB from convening such proceedings, a hearing to determine the Nationals’ and Orioles’ rights fees for the 2012-2016 period will be held” with a new arbitration panel made up of MLB ownership designees known as the RSDC (Revenue Sharing Definitions Committee) with hearings beginning the first week of August 2016.

According to a court-filed copy of the May 27, 2016 memo from MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred informed all teams that he has changed the RSDC from the original panel that heard and ruled on the original arbitration to Brewers owner Mark Attanasio, Mariners President Kevin Mather and Blue Jays President Mark Shapiro.

“As we have stated previously and continue to believe, the most expeditious path for resolving the telecast rights fee dispute between the Nationals and MASN is arbitration before a neutral forum independent of MLB and outside of MLB’s control,” said MASN attorney Thomas Hall in a letter released by the court recently.

With MASN having won a reversal of the original RSDC arbitration award in round 1, they are now fighting to get a neutral arbitration panel not related to MLB to hear Arb 2 while the original MASN contract calls for the RSDC as the only arbitration panel which is comprised of 3 MLB team representatives. What MASN is asking for is a break from the terms of the original contract, and something that the judge has already declared is outside of his authority. The Nationals corrected the possible ‘conflict of interest’ issue with the  Proskauer law firm the Nationals were using originally, and has changed to a firm with no conflicts they believe. With no valid legal arguments remaining that the judge has not already thrown out, MASN has resorted to trashing MLB, then claiming bias when MLB responds.

Nats lose 6th Gio start in a row: Postgame

Gio Gonzalez could not get it done today even after his team got the game tied at 3-3 for him after Gio fell in a 3-1 deficit. Gio gave up 6 runs of which 5 were earned as Gio’s ERA has ballooned to 4.25.  Gio’s ERA on May 2nd was 1.15 then he gave this interview after the game:

“It’s crazy how it is when a manager lets you pitch more than three innings,” Gonzalez said. “When your manager believes in you so much. I’m just happy to see has all the confidence in the world to let me pitch. I’ve been doing this for quite a while. I’m just grateful that he believes in me every inning and he lets me go out there and become the pitcher I am. I’m glad he’s giving me a little more rope.”

Some call it baseball karma that he is reaping what he sowed as Gio clearly dissed his previous manager, and you don’t publicly do that. In Gio’s next start after those comments, he gave up 5 runs in Chicago for a tough loss. The team is now 5-9 in Gio’s starts and have now lost his last 6 starts.

This game today featured a breakout game by Michael Taylor going 4-4 with 2 home runs and a double. Danny Espinosa had the other run on a home run. Other than that it was a disappointing day although Matt Belisle and Felipe Rivero were good out of the bullpen.

Game #70 Gio’s 1st Father’s Day: Game Thread

Happy Father’s Day to all the Dads, and today is Gio Gonzalez’s first Father’s Day as you may recall, he and his fiancé Lea welcomed their son Enzo into the world back in Spring Training. What an honor that Gio on his first Father’s Day will get to pitch for the Nationals.

Today is also the 10 year anniversary of Ryan Zimmerman’s 1st walk-off on Father’s Day against the New York Yankees back in 2006. Ryan has a 2 year old daughter Mackenzie, and his second daughter, Hayden Lynn, was born earlier this month on June 2, 2016.

This afternoon is the fourth and final game in this four game series against the Padres in San Diego, and the Nats lost last night in excruciating fashion in a game that exposed what many were concerned about in this bullpen. Mike Rizzo was interviewed yesterday before the game and was asked about the bullpen.

“We like our bullpen as it is,” Mike Rizzo said. “It’s a definite positive point for us in the season. When your 9th inning man [Papelbon] goes down, a lot of players are pitching out of comfortable positions. That’s where we find ourselves right now….We have guys who can fill in until Papelbon comes back…I think we have a good mix of guys.”

It takes a team to win and a team to lose. An ugly loss tonight that we have seen before.: Postgame

This game had that September 8, 2015 feel to it where the Nats relievers (Treinen, Rivero, Storen) combined for giving up 6 runs in an inning and blowing a win. It was like deja vu all over again as Rivero and Treinen combined for giving up 6 runs to blow a win.

People are looking to place blame in a team game, but you can see where plays weren’t made on defense and the 2nd batter in the 8th inning popped up in shallow centerfield, and the ball wasn’t caught. That opened the floodgates as the 3rd batter walked and disaster followed. Defensive alignments changed to allow 2 more balls to fall in plus an error by Felipe Rivero on a comebacker that was a tailor-made doubleplay when the score was 3-3 at that point.

Clearly something has to be done with Felipe Rivero. From April 22 to April 26, Rivero appeared 3 times in 3 multi inning relief appearances, and it’s been downhill since that point until Rivero got 3 rest days after May 9th. Rivero improved his numbers through the end of May, but June has been horrendous where he has given up 13 earned runs in 5 1/3 innings in June while facing 31 batters and a WHIP of 3.00. In June now he has given up 10 hits and 6 walks in those 5 1/3 innings, and that error from tonight.

By May 31st, there were only 2 other relievers with a higher combination of appearances/innings than Felipe Rivero who is only 24 years old. Rivero in April looked like a closer in waiting. Slowly he has turned to “mush” and has struggled to get lefties out.

Not to be lost in this mess, Max Scherzer pitched a very good game giving up 1 run over 6 innings, and Matt Belisle pitched the 7th inning and did a good job. All starters had hits tonight except for Harper and Espinosa.
