Game #18 at the Joker for the #Nats

Photo by John Caulfield for TalkNats

For the previous thirteen seasons of the Washington Nationals existence, road trips were always long bus rides of at least an hour which is why the move to West Palm Beach was a necessity. Today is reminiscent of the Viera days of yesteryear as the buses will be loading as the sun is rising. It will feel earlier like 6am when the players start loading the buses as daylight savings time just kicked in and bodies have not adjusted. The destination is Publix Field at Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland, Florida which is situated between Orlando and Tampa near Route 4. Continue reading

Game #17 It’s a new week — Nats still don’t have Eaton in the line-up

When Andrew Toles twisted his knee less than two weeks after Adam Eaton, he also needed ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) surgery. Toles has been a full participant in Dodgers camp and has played in 3 more games this Spring than Bryce Harper. Toles has had less recovery time than Eaton and has been going full-speed in Dodgers camp since the beginning. Even Wilson Ramos who suffered his second ACL blow-out in the same knee made it back to game action quicker last year. Ramos was back playing minor-league rehab games just 8-months after his ACL surgery in September 2016 while playing for the Nationals and was back starting for Tampa less than 9 months later. There’s no tying in baseball! (Except in spring training…)

With apologies to Tom Hanks and Bitty Schram…

Everyone is a winner today at The Fitteam Ballpark of the Palm Beaches, as the Houston Astros and the Washington Nationals deadlocked 22 for the Nats’ second tie of the year. Their record in Grapefruit League play, which will be crucial in determining absolutely nothing this season, now stands at 772.

Game #16 Nats play their neighbors again at FBOTPB; Fedde starts—not Gio

Today was originally Gio Gonzalez‘s day to start since his previous start 6 days ago in a game that was saved by two spectacular plays by his leftfielder Andrew Stevenson who not only made a diving catch, but also gunned out Miguel Cabrera at the plate to save more damage. Gio gave up 6-hits over 3 innings and luckily Gio only gave up 2 runs. Instead today’s starter is now Erick Fedde who will have Tommy Milone relieving him. Five days ago it was A.J. Cole starting in tandem with Erick Fedde. That begs the question, where is A.J. Cole? What is going on? Did Gio start on the Minor’s side? Continue reading

New teams forming for girls’ softball

Softball

A photo of what a Little League champion softball team can be!

This is for the girls: The Mason District Little League is forming two softball teams just for you.

(Note: this article was originally published on the Annandale Blog it is being cross posted on Talk Nats. The Nationals are an MDLL sponsor, having donated funds to overhaul “Pudge” Field and providing uniforms for the league.)

There will be two mixed-age teams with girls age 9-12, but younger kids who want to join won’t be turned away, says coach Tom Dickson of the MDLL. The first season will be mostly instructional, with a couple of games possibly set up late in the season against other leagues. Continue reading

Game #13 is big for A.J. Cole; Seth Romero incident too.

Cole Romero

Front office VP Bob Miller looks on as 1st rounder Seth Romero signs

Last year, the Nationals in the draft went for the best talent available drafting Seth Romero in the first round even though his reported issues with teammates and the drug culture were well-documented. Nine months later, the gestation period for a newborn baby was all the time Romero needed to break a Nationals rule and get sent home. The irony is that a newborn baby does not have the cognitive ability to control their behavior or adhere to rules. Talent can only take you so far — dedication is a prerequisite towards success.
