Game #12 A.J. Cole gets the finale against his nemisis

Cole is the starter

Last week, Nationals manager Dave Martinez promised that A.J. Cole would get another start this week and true to his word, Cole is the starter in this early afternoon finale against the Braves.  In Cole’s career he has a 2.65 ERA against the Mets, 3.13 against the Phillies, 5.56 against the Marlins, and a jaw-dropping bloated 19.96 ERA against the Atlanta Braves in 3 games. The Braves have been Cole’s kryptonite, and they stack the lefties against him. Maybe this is a lesson of, if you don’t succeed — try, try again. Continue reading

Strasburg has 8 shutout innings; Zim the big hit; Nats win another to go above .500

MASN Screenshot

Another pitching gem in this one, and tonight’s star was Stephen Strasburg who went 8.0 full innings of shutout baseball. The bullpen bent and gave up a run in this Nationals 4-to-1 win. The Nationals also move above .500 with this win and have something to build on. When Nats’ manager Dave Martinez moved Ryan Zimmerman back to the 5th spot in the line-up, he cashed-in with immediate dividends as Zim cracked a 2-run triple in the first inning. With this win, the Nationals have already clinched this series against the Braves. Continue reading

Game #11 Stephen Strasburg wants to continue yesterday’s momentum

Today’s roster will get a changeup as Miguel Montero is set to return from his paternity leave. With Pedro Severino playing so well and Matt Wieters set to return from the 10-day DL on Thursday, there are going to be some difficult decisions that will transpire with these roster moves. There was a hint yesterday that the Nationals could carry three catchers on the roster. With Severino catching Scherzer last night, the ace arguably had his best start since his October 3rd no-hitter in 2015. Continue reading

The losing streak is over in 2 hours and 22 minutes of pitching mastery by Max Scherzer

Photo by Marlene Koenig for TalkNats

When you needed Max Scherzer to go deep in this game to save the bullpen, Nationals manager Dave Martinez got more then he bargained for as he got a 2-hit complete game shutout from the reigning Cy Young for a big win and a stoppage on that five-game losing streak. The Nationals moved to .500 on the season. Continue reading

Game #10 Braves come to Nationals Park; Scherzer on the mound against Teheran

Scherzer Game 10

Who would you want on the mound after a 5-game skid? Probably Clayton Kershaw, Max Scherzer or Chris Sale. Guess what, the Nationals have Max Scherzer pitching tonight, and he has a 4-and-1 record stopping losing streaks of 4-or-more games. A year ago leading up to the 10-game mark, the Nationals entered with a record of 5-and-4 which is one game better in the standings compared to today. That is all. If the Nationals won last night they would have had identical records at this point in time compared to last year. A great Max Scherzer game could make all of NatsTown feel better. Don’t worry about the New York Mets hot start with a 7-and-1 record. At some point, the Mets will have a 1-and-7 slide. Call me in 30 days — and let’s compare records. Continue reading

Nats fall to 4-5 on the season after being swept in extra innings.

The Nationals blew so many opportunities to win on this day and break the losing streak which has now grown to five games. There were many positives in this game, and a few negatives like you would expect in a loss. The New York Mets made numerous mistakes and were staring at bases loaded with one out with Michael Taylor up and they struck him out when a productive out would have won the game. Instead the game kept going and in the end the Mets struck first in extra innings and it held up for them as the Nats lose 6-to-5 with Kintzler taking another loss. Continue reading

Game #9 Nats look to Tanner Roark to get back in the W column

Photo by Marlene Koenig for TalkNats

The Nats turn to Tanner Roark for his best tonight on the ESPN Sunday Night game of the week against the Mets of New York. For the Mets, they have Matt Harvey on the mound. The Nationals will go with a lefty dominant line-up with three of the first four batters adding Matt Adams at first base and Adam Eaton is back in left field. Continue reading

#Nats go from a 4-0 start to a 0-4 slide; Ejections and Rejections

The Nationals were 2-for-8 with runners-in-scoring-position and those 2-hits belonged to Pedro Severino. That means the Nationals had 6 additional opportunities to score, and they did not take advantage of the situations in a game in which the Nationals stole 5 bases to move up for chances to score. Anthony Rendon was ejected from the game after a strikeout, he then flipped his bat in front of homeplate umpire Marty Foster. After Rendon was rejected, it was manager Dave Martinez who argued on Rendon’s behalf and was also ejected.

“Awesome,” Bryce Harper said about his manager’s support for his players. “That’s what it’s all about. He went out there and he fights for his players, and we saw that right there. I was talking to my dad yesterday, and [Dave Martinez] is a manager that you want to fight for, and you want to win for. Just the little things that he does that make you want to run through a wall for him and want to win ballgames for him. So that was huge seeing that and knowing he has our back, and we have his.”

Replacing Rendon was Matt Reynolds who looked like a dear in the headlights leaving two runners on-base, but it was Ryan Zimmerman who added two more runners stranded on-base to give him 20 stranded runners this season in just his 6th game started. Bryce Harper hit his league leading 5th home run which put the Nats ahead in the bottom of the 6th inning, but Brandon Kintzler quickly gave up two runs in the top of the 7th inning to blow the save and lose the game.  Continue reading

Game #8 Gio in the stopper role in a game of lefties with Mets

Daniel Murphy takes another home trot against the NY Mets

Clearly, the Washington Nationals miss Daniel Murphy who has just seemed to dominate the Mets in his career with the Washington Nationals.  Murphy has ownage on his original team where he sports his best NL stats slashing .386 /.435/ .700/ 1.135 in 38 career games. While Howie Kendrick is a key substitute in Murphy’s absence, he does not instill that fear in opposing pitchers like Murphy has with some of these Mets hurlers. Murphy has a career .778 slugging percentage, by the way, against today’s Mets’ starter Steven Matz while Howie Kendrick is at .167. Time to turn those numbers around today Howie as the Nats players have to step-up for Murphy. Continue reading
