Game #91 Jeremy Hellickson tries to do what Roark and JRod could not do!

Every game is crucial for the Nationals as there is less than 45% of the season remaining, and the Nationals could really use a win tonight and for starter Jeremy Hellickson to go deep into the game. With that said, it is too soon to talk about the team going into “sell” mode when they are only 5 ½ games out of first place, but it does not stop the salacious rumors of trading Bryce Harper and others. Trade talks involving Harper get more newspapers sold, extra TV viewership, and give websites a boost of traffic and views and clicks. Those tantalizing tidbits when you see those headlines you hate — usually get you to click. It’s human nature that people want to talk about it.  Continue reading

Game #90 Nats have 3 games in Pittsburgh

It’s great to have All-Star players on your team like Scherzer, Doolittle and Harper, and the Washington Nationals have other star players like Trea Turner, Anthony Rendon, and Juan Soto who are near the tops of baseball in analytics. This week, Mark Reynolds took home the hardware of Player of the Week and beat out his teammate Trea Turner who also had a spectacular week with the bat and glove.  With all of this star power that the Nationals possess, wins just don’t come easy for a team that used to be built on starting pitching. Vote for Trea Turner for the All-Star game; “Do you go to FanGraphs at all?”

You always hope that the “behind the scenes” votes would get the All-Star game voting right. Last year, the leagues best 3rd baseman, Anthony Rendon, was a snub. The Nationals were in first place and had five players chosen: Max Scherzer, Stephen Strasburg, Ryan Zimmerman, Daniel Murphy and Bryce Harper. Rendon was a deserving 6th player, and he never made it. Continue reading

The Nats record when Roark pitches is 5 wins – 14 losses; a .263 W%

Tanner Roark photo by Navy Yard Nats for TalkNats

In today’s loss, the bullpen had to cover 5 full innings, and there was nothing pretty about this game. The pitching was awful, the defense was uninspiring, and the offense fizzled out when they had chances to blow the game open. The top of the line-up was 0-14 stranding numerous runners. Things were so bad for the bullpen that Mark Reynolds had to finish up the 9th inning. Continue reading

Game #89 An unusual line-up for Tanner Roark

You just never know what manager Dave Martinez‘s sleepless nights are like as he spoke last night about how he would not sleep well as he tried to get Mark Reynolds into today’s line-up. He found a way. Reynolds will start at 3rd base. Martinez found a way to get the smoldering hot bench player another start. No word yet how well Davey slept last night. Reynolds made it clear that he was going to sleep well. Continue reading

Tonight is Mark Reynolds night again! 10 RBIs; 5-5, 2 HRs, Web Gem

The Nationals win a laugher at 18-4 behind 7 innings from Max Scherzer, and 10 RBIs from Mark Reynolds who padded his stats after his walk-off home run last night to add 2 more home runs in a 5-for-5 night that was a triple short of a cycle. In his last 3 games, Reynolds is 6-for-6  with 5 runs scored and 11 RBIs with 3 HR, double, 2 singles and a Walk-off. Tonight his 10 RBIs tied a Washington Nationals record set last year by Anthony Rendon. Reynolds is the 15th player in MLB history to record at least 10 RBIs in a game. Reynolds with Trea Turner set a record as the only pair with at least 8 RBIs in a week. Continue reading

Game #88 Go deep Max Scherzer

Photo by Marlene Koenig for TalkNats

It’s a battle of attrition on a 25-man roster when your starter exits early. The bullpen needed 7-innings from Gio Gonzalez last night and barely got five. The bullpen covered 8 innings for an injured Erick Fedde and 6 innings for a sick Jeremy Hellickson. Tonight the Washington Nationals pin their hopes on the ace of aces Max Scherzer.

The Nationals organist exists!

We cashed in some Red Carpet Reward points for a visit with the Nationals Park organist.  It was well worth it.  The view from his perch is spectacular, although it is a long way up.  We had a nice view of approaching weather and the tarp being rolled out since we were up there for the second, third, and fourth innings during that rain delayed game in the last homestand.
