Game #10 Heavyweights on the mound tonight in Philly!

Photo by Lynn G. for TalkNats

Last night’s game between the Nationals and Phillies showed how evenly matched these teams are, but the Nationals are playing without one of their stars, Trea Turner, and a bullpen that is trying to find their way. The Phillies have everyone healthy and it showed. The game did not have a playoff feel as the Phillies did not have a big crowd on-hand on a perfect night for baseball as it was unseasonably warm and no precipitation. Maybe the fans are waiting for tonight’s heavyweight bout between Stephen Strasburg and Aaron NolaContinue reading

Another one-run loss; You can pick your “Little Things” as there were many!

Photo by Lynn G. for TalkNats

There were so many highlights in this game, but too many lowlights including some bad fielding plays, a questionable “send”, a non-hustle play on a groundout by Juan Soto, and some bad situational hitting. The star of the game was Kurt Suzuki who crushed a two-run home run, and Brian Dozier hit a 9th inning blast to centerfield to get off the schneid. Anibal Sanchez pitched well enough to win this one giving up 3-runs in 5 2/3 innings. The bullpen was good in spots until Justin Miller gave up a home run in the 8th inning which is the team’s 18th run they have given up in the 8th inning. Continue reading

Game #9 Nats take first trip to Philly this year

Photo by Lynn G. for TalkNats

The Nationals make their first trip to Philadelphia this season for a three-game series with their NL East rival. These teams met last week for a two-game series in Washington D.C. that was split. Anibal Sanchez makes his second start of the season after he was pulled early last week after taking a liner off of his upper leg/hip area on his left-side. Continue reading

Nats win a series behind 12 runs of support! But it was not pretty…

Photo by Lynn G. for TalkNats

The Nationals won a game they needed to win and won the series, but it was not pretty. You could describe it as pretty ugly the way it ended. Entering the bottom of the 7th inning, the Nats were up by a score of 12-to-1. However in this blowout game, manager Dave Martinez left Max Scherzer in the game, and he hit the wall quickly and unfortunately gave up 3 hits to begin the 7th inning and then before you knew it Matt Grace was in the game and the score was 12-6. Scherzer’s final line was 6 1/3 innings with 4 earned runs and 100 pitches thrown.

Trevor Rosenthal got to start the 8th inning, but he hit the first batter he faced then threw two wild pitches and a walk and was pulled. Rosenthal gave any baseball fans who are old enough a flashback to when Rick Ankiel’s career as a pitcher ended when he could no longer find the plate. Sometimes the game becomes all about the mental side. Luckily Wander Suero got 3 outs with no runs scoring. Joe ROss got the 9th inning but he gave up a 3-run home run to Michael Conforto and was replaced by Sean Doolittle who had to close out a 12-9 win. Continue reading

Game #8 Scherzer on the mound again and this time looking to win a series! Bullpen changes coming!

Photo by Sol Tucker for TalkNats

If you think that Max Scherzer‘s name as the starting pitcher is a misprint, you are wrong. This is Scherzer’s third start of the season, and with this game he will have started every 2.67 games this season. Scherzer is a starter and not an “opener” so these are legitimate starts. The veteran pitcher has already thrown 205 pitches this season, and has not received a run of support from his offense. Maybe Max needs to take matters into his own hands and knock in some runs, and we all know he is capable of doing that. But then again the Nats scored 4-runs off of Mets starter Zack Wheeler a week ago in just 5 innings.  Continue reading

Tell us if you’ve heard this one before: The bullpen loses another one!

The Nationals had a 5-3 lead in the 8th inning after Anthony Rendon homered and Wilmer Difo crushed a 2-run home run into the upper deck in Citifield, but then the Nats bullpen in the bottom of the 8th inning self-destructed. Justin Miller got no help from the umpire and gave up 2 solo home runs and Tony Sipp never retired a batter leading to the winning run and a disappointing 6-5 loss. Continue reading

Game #7 Nats have Patrick Corbin on the mound in NY

MLB Network graphic

The Nationals will play their second road game of the season this afternoon in CitiField in this three game series with the Mets. This is the fifth game already this season with the Mets and tomorrow will be the sixth in a strange schedule that MLB has put together. Patrick Corbin starts today for the Nats and Max Scherzer starts tomorrow according to Nats PR, and the rotation is all over the place. Jeremy Hellickson has no starts, Anibal Sanchez has had one start, Patrick Corbin and Stephen Strasburg have each had two starts, and as of tomorrow Max Scherzer will have three starts. Can $200 million buy you happiness — so far it has bought .500 baseball!

Photo by Lynn G. for TalkNats

Everything seemed rosy on paper for the Washington Nationals and their burgeoning payroll that with incentives will be over $200 million and among the tops in baseball next to the Red Sox and Cubs. How they got to $200 million was via snapping up free agents like Patrick Corbin, Brian Dozier, Trevor Rosenthal, Matt Adams, Anibal Sanchez, Kurt Suzuki, Jeremy Hellickson, and Tony Sipp. The team also traded for Kyle Barraclough and Yan Gomes and the roster was mostly set. Nats get back to .500 with a Strasburg shutout gem!

Photo by Marlene Koenig for TalkNats

The Nats were never behind in this game, and they cruised to a victory on the arm of Stephen Strasburg who threw a 6 2/3 inning shutout gem that finished at a 4-to-0 game to spoil the Mets home opener. The Nats scored their first run on some small ball without a hit as Wilmer Difo safety squeezed Juan Soto across the plate as Soto walked to lead-off the second inning. The Nats did not have a hit until the 6th inning when Victor Robles homered off of Mets starter Noah Syndergaard. The Nats played good baseball except for two unforced errors. One was by Strasburg on a late dash to cover first base and Ryan Zimmerman threw behind him, but Strasburg quickly got a doubleplay on Robinson Cano to not expend any extra pitches until Anthony Rendon booted a tailor-made doubleplay grounder that cost Strasburg to face three more batters and stretch his pitch count which was 93 pitches in the 6th inning. Game #6 Nats first road trip of 2019 begins with the Mets home opener

Photo by Marlene Koenig for TalkNats

The Washington Nationals start their first road trip of the 2019 season in CitiField against the Mets who have their home opener today. Both teams have last Saturday’s starters on the mound today in Noah Syndergaard and Stephen Strasburg who both sport identical 6.00 ERAs. The difference between the two pitchers is Strasburg was victimized by some shaky defense including a couple of misreads in centerfield while Syndergaard if anything was helped by his defense or his numbers could have been worse. For those who remember Saturday’s debacle, the Nats tied the game 4-4 in the 6th inning only to watch their first bullpen implosion in the 8th inning as the Mets scored 4 runs. The Nats battled back but fell short 11-8 in that one. Continue reading
