The Nationals have Max Scherzer on the mound tonight against the Marlins as Max goes for history to join an elite club of pitchers in the 300 strikeout club for a season. Scherzer has 290 strikeouts in the books right now on the season and needs 10 more tonight to reach 300. If he reaches the 300 K Club, he would be the 17th pitcher to ever do it, and he would join Walter Johnson as the only other Washington baseball pitcher in the club. Continue reading

For everything that has gone wrong for the Nationals this season, a few things have gone right, and that is a credit to several players who are putting up some monster numbers on the season. For the first time in his career, Bryce Harper has reached the 100 RBI mark in a season, and Juan Soto hit his 21st home run on the season giving him 66 RBIs on the season which is the 4th most ever in a season for a teenager, and that moved Soto past the legend Mickey Mantle. Soto now only trails Phil Cavarretta (82), Mel Ott (77), and George Davis (73) on that list. Other players with significant accomplishments tonight were Anthony Rendon who hit his 24th home run which pushed him over the .900 OPS mark while also setting a career high in doubles, and Trea Turner had another multi-hit night which gave him a 12-game hitting streak and a 24-game on-base streak and his 101st run scored. The Nationals are set to open their final homestand of the 2018 season, and you better hurry it up and get to Nationals Park just in case this is Bryce Harper‘s final games in a Nationals uniform. The superstar outfielder could say goodbye on Wednesday to Nats Park and the fans, and no matter how you feel about Harper, he will leave an indelible mark on Washington, D.C. baseball. The Nationals’ best position player by a wide margin is Anthony Rendon. This is not a subjective opinion — it’s an opinion backed up by independent statistics. TTB has put together the following for 4 years: 6.4, 4.3, 6.7 and 5.5 fWAR (2015 was destroyed by injuries). This is superstar stuff, and it should be the stuff of someone who is on the all-star team every year, but instead Anthony Rendon has never played in the all-star game for 2 reasons: 1) Nolan Arenado and Kris Bryant 2) Anthony doesn’t draw attention to himself. The Tampa Bay Rays won’t make the playoffs. The historic excellence of the Boston Red Sox, as well as the great play of the second-place New York Yankees, has seen to that. But it’s undeniable that the Rays have done something remarkable this year.
Heading into the 2018 season, the Rays were a joke. A team stocked with second-rate talent, which had just traded off its franchise player in Evan Longoria, stuck in a decrepit stadium in St. Petersburg — and worst of all, they didn’t even have a real pitching rotation. Continue reading

Another rainy day in Washington, D.C. today. Where have we heard that before? The 2018 season has had more rain delays in Nats Park than we can count on our fingers. Hopefully Skittles, which is the company that sponsors the Nationals Park tarp, is paying per rain delay because that tarp with the rainbow skittles has been seen too often this season.’
“We’re going to sit a while I’m assuming,” manager Dave Martinez said.
Because this is the last series for these two teams this season, MLB takes over the decision on whether they will postpone the game, and if they did postpone this game it would almost certainly mean the Nationals would not reschedule this game as this game has no post-season implications.

This game between the Washington Nationals and the New York Mets was tied 1-1 in the 3rd inning. Nats starter Joe Ross painted a strike 3 on Jay Bruce — only it was called ball 2, and two pitches later Bruce doubled home the 2nd run of the game for his Mets and then scored in what was a 3-run third inning. The Nationals lost 4-2 to Jacob deGrom who looks to be the apparent frontrunner for the Cy Young. Continue reading
Last night Max Scherzer had his chance to do something spectacular in his quest to win another Cy Young award and while he was good with accumulating strikeouts, Max gave up two home runs and 3 earned runs which won’t help his chances to overtake the front-runner Jacob deGrom who coincidentally will face the Nationals tonight in a matchup against Joe Ross.
