Game #158 Finally, the Nats give Tony and Trea a day-off after 110+

The players all talked about some of the reasons for the Nats miraculous comeback in the season and overwhelmingly they said that the philosophy of “Let’s go One-and-O every day” that was the 2019 mantra of manager Dave Martinez resonated with them and made the difference in how they approached each day. The sports cliché is to take it one game at a time, and they did. The cohesive clubhouse and the belief in the next man up is something we have never seen in this team that greatly missed the departure of Jayson Werth after the 2017 season as the team leader. The team went more veteran this year while promoting one rookie, Victor Robles, onto the Opening Day roster, and he learned on the job and improved all season into the best defensive centerfielder in baseball. The additions in-season of Gerardo Parra, Fernando Rodney, and Asdrubal Cabrera who all arrived as virtual freebies via DFA’s from their previous teams, changed the vibe with a Latino flair that seemed to raise the energy level while also helping this team win games. The Nats have clinched a Wild Card berth on September 24, 2019!

It took a come-from-behind grand slam by Trea Turner to put his team up 6-4 at the same time the Pittsburgh Pirates went from a no-hitter to a beatdown on the Cubs to turn the Magic number to ZERO. The Nats now know they are going to the postseason as a Wild Card team which is unfamiliar territory for this team, but as Sean Doolittle said it does not matter as it is still a way into the dance. The Nats were behind in this game by a score of 4-0 then chipped away and won it on the Turner grand slam. Max Scherzer gave up a 3-run home run in the first inning and a solo home run, but you had the feeling the Nats could comeback and they did. When Turner’s grand slam ball entered the Phillies’ bullpen, it simultaneously turned Scherzer’s night from a potential loss to a potential win that became a reality three innings later.  Continue reading

Game #157 Max Scherzer knows a thing about winning!

What started during Spring Training as a mission, a postseason berth could become a reality for the Washington Nationals tonight if Max Scherzer gets the win and the Cubs lose in their game in Pittsburgh. While the Nats can only control their own destiny, they have their ace on the mound to accomplish the Nats part of ratcheting down the Magic number that is currently at 2. If the Cubs do not lose tonight, clinching a postseason spot will move to tomorrow.   Continue reading

Nats win! Nats win! Phillies eliminated. The Nats Magic # is 2

Photo from Nationals Instagram

The Nationals just officially ended the Phillies season while turning a scary bases loaded jam in the first inning into the Phillies only threat of the game. In fact the Nats shutout the Phillies in the final eight inning of which the bullpen pitched a 5.0 inning perfect game in relief of “spot” starter Joe Ross. With a final score of 4-1, this win ratcheted the Nats “Magic” number to 2.  Continue reading

Game #156 It is doubleheader day; Joe Ross for the first game!

Photo by Kevin Nibley for TalkNats

There seemed to be a tight-lipped nature as to the ongoing status of pitcher Joe Ross who last pitched on September 2nd and was shutdown for what was reported to be forearm pain he experienced in a bullpen session before his next scheduled start. Ross was replaced by Austin Voth in the rotation then there was little news on Ross, and maybe that was more of a function that the media rarely asked about him or saw him pitching in a bullpen session. All of a sudden and out of virtually nowhere, Ross was announced in the pre-game as the starter in the first game of this doubleheader. Continue reading

A Corbin gem with 7-runs of support gets the homestand started with a Curly W!

Photo by Marlene Koenig for TalkNats

The Nationals needed a win tonight to get this homestand started the right way, and Patrick Corbin and his teammates delivered with a 7-2 win. Corbin almost got through his outing with no runs surrendered, but a doubleplay that was not turned scored the only blemish on his statline as his ERA ratcheted down to a 3.05 ERA with only one earned run over six innings. For the Nats offense, sure, they could have scored more runs as Howie Kendrick stranded 9 runners tonight, but his teammates picked him up. Continue reading

Game #155 The Nats open their 5-game series against the Phillies

Photo by Andrew Lang for TalkNats

As baseball’s regular season winds down to its final week, the Washington Nationals want to be one of the remaining ten teams that advances to the postseason. As summer is over, we are officially in autumn, and inching closer to October. We detailed how the Nats control their own destiny, and if they can win at least four of their eight games remaining on the regular season schedule, the Nationals will advance to the postseason. They start their first of five games in four days against the Phillies tonight. The Nats have Patrick Corbin on the mound for the first game of this series. This will be his fourth start against the Phillies this season, and he has a 3.32 ERA this season versus the Phillies. Corbin has been great at Nationals Park this season with a 2.00 ERA, and a 7-2 record. Continue reading

Another look at the Wild Card race!

With 8 games remaining on the regular season schedule for the Washington Nationals, they still control their own destiny as they own the top spot in the Wild Card in a virtual tie with the Brewers because the Nats have two more games to play than the Brewers who have 6 games remaining. The Nationals postseason picture is solely focused on a Wild Card spot as the Braves have already clinched the NL East division crown. Continue reading

Another bullpen meltdown and this time the offense doesn’t bail them out!

The Washington Nationals led 3-1 going into the bottom of the seventh inning, and manager Dave Martinez sent Hunter Strickland out for another inning. This season, Strickland has only pitched more than one inning once and that was after five days off. Strickland pitched yesterday in a key spot and was excellent and pitched a scoreless sixth inning today, but today he quickly unraveled and the Nats gave up four runs between Strickland, Wander Suero, and Tanner Rainey in that seventh inning and the blown save became a loss as this time the offense could not bail out the bullpen. There were many failures in this game like the Juan Soto doubleplay ball in the first inning that ended a promising inning where the Nats had the Marlins on the ropes from the start of the game but the Nats could never put the game away. Game #154 Time to get greedy and think “SWEEP” in Miami!

Photo by Marlene Koenig for TalkNats

When you are winning series, your team is taking care of business. There are times to get greedy and want a sweep. The Washington Nationals really could use this win today to get them to 86 games which would get them back to the magic 18 games over .500 and put them over a 90-win pace allowing them to just go 4-4 to finish the season to win 90 games. The Brewers only have teams under .500 to play the remainder of the regular season, and in order to win a Wild Card berth the Cubs can no longer win 90 games in the 162 game schedule nor can the Mets or any other team. If the Nats win 90 games, they are in and that is guaranteed! Continue reading
