This will be
MacKenzie Gore‘s final tune-up in Grapefruit League play this year as the 11-9-2 Washington Nationals take on the Yankees in West Palm Beach. The good news is that manager
Dave Martinez for the first time this year has his “every day” lineup with the return of
Joey Meneses from the World Baseball Classic as well as penciling in his other eight starters for the same game. While Meneses is in left field today, that appears to be to give
Corey Dickerson a DH game.
With the projected Opening Week starters in this game, the substitutes coming in will be three players who are competing for the final bench spot as we will get
Matt Adams,
Michael Chavis, and
Jeter Downs for comparisons.
The Nats have given no indications as to their final selections for the Opening Day roster for the bench or the bullpen. The fight for the final three to four bullpen spots looks like a real competition between 40-man relievers and some NRIs.
There certainly will be a question of 60-day IL moves to open up roster spots, and it is fairly obvious that
Stephen Strasburg,
Cade Cavalli, and
Tanner Rainey will open up three spots. We have to see what general manager Mike Rizzo does with the injured
Victor Arano and
Carter Kieboom as to if either or both land on the 60-day IL with the challenge being who leaves the roster when those players are activated. It is a carefully choreographed dance that all general managers are waltzing through right now. That could bring an opportunity or two for some DFA’d players that Rizzo might want to pick up either as waiver claims, free agents pickups, or possibly even a trade.
There is no television for this game, triple shocker and we have no radio. We do have our photographer Sol Tucker in the ballpark for this one. We will try to get some videos and photos up later.
