WEST PALM BEACH, FL: Elijah Green and top prospects working on the backfields will continue into April; Photo published with permission given to TalkNats
While most minor leaguers will stay behind in West Palm Beach into April as they work in the warm weather before most depart for Fredericksburg, Wilmington, Harrisburg, and Rochester, there might be a lucky few who will get chosen by manager
Dave Martinez and general manager Mike Rizzo to make the Opening Day roster for the Washington Nationals in 11 days. We are talking about the
NRIs who were signed to Minor League deals and with a real shot of making this roster.
Hobie Harris,
Anthony Banda,
Matt Adams,
Michael Chavis, and
Chad Kuhl top that list of hopefuls with at least two of them expected to make the Opening Day roster.
Injuries bring opportunities to the next man up, and Kuhl looks like he could be a fortunate recipient of
Cade Cavalli‘s unfortunate elbow injury. As of now, Kuhl looks like the favorite to be the fifth starter in the Nats’ roster. But the team could wait for April 5th to add Kuhl to the roster as the first date the team would need a 5th starter.
The Grapefruit League play ends for the Nats next Sunday as the team will fly back to Washington, D.C. for an exhibition game against the Yankees on March 28, with Opening Day just two days later. The Nats still have not named their Opening Day starting pitcher. Most think it will come down to either
Patrick Corbin or
Josiah Gray.
There is no television for this game, shocker! But we do have Charlie & Dave on the radio call for this one!
