What the Nationals’ Spring Training Is Revealing About the 2026 Team

Spring Training usually brings optimism, hope springs eternal. This year in West Palm Beach, the mood feels more purposeful. The Nationals aren’t simply moving through another rebuild. This camp feels like a do-over with new ideas, new voices, and a roster searching for its next identity.

President of Baseball Operations Paul Toboni and manager Blake Butera have led this shift. Coaches are testing approaches. Players are adjusting roles. Spring Training results won’t decide the season, but the patterns forming in camp often reveal where a club believes it’s headed.

Spring Training Game #16 Nats in Jupiter

The Washington Nationals had their final day-off on their Grapefruit League calendar yesterday. We are past the halfway point in Spring Training and just 16-days to Opening Day. Today, the team travels a little north to Jupiter for a game against the Marlins.

On the Zack Littell signing, his contract became official this morning as we sourced that he was in camp during the early morning. His deal was creative. Nats pay him $3 million now with $2.25 million in an innings incentives package and $4 million guaranteed if his mutual option is not picked up. The mutual option is for $12 million. Essentially, it’s only an $8 million option due to the $4 million option buyout. The way MLB accounts for it, the deal is $7 million guaranteed for 2026 plus $2.5 million in incentives bringing it to possibly $9.5 million. That brings the Nats to $118 million in CBT payroll before incentive bonuses which Littel, Foster Griffin, and Miles Mikolas have in their contracts.

Updated Nats NL East Odds as Spring Training Gets to the Halfway Point

When Paul Toboni, told the assembled West Palm Beach media that trading MacKenzie Gore was about “untapped potential baked into the return,” he chose his words with the precision of a 35-year-old President of Baseball Operations who has exactly one chance to get this right. The departing Gore — a 2025 All-Star lefty who also went 5-15 on a 66-win ballclub — is now a Texas Ranger, shipped to Arlington in a five-for-one haul headlined by last year’s 12th-overall pick Gavin Fien. That transaction, more than any Spring Training lineup card or Grapefruit League box score, is the thesis statement for this rebuild-of-the-rebuild of the Washington Nationals.

Is 2026 the Year the Washington Nationals Finally Turn the Corner?

The Washington Nationals approach the 2026 Major League Baseball season at an existential, structural, and philosophical level under their new management led by Paul Toboni who was hired just six months ago as the President of Baseball Operations. The organization has been undergoing a painful and lengthy rebuilding process since securing its first World Series title in 2019. This long reset has tested the patience of the hardcore fanbase. Toboni, and the strategic savvy with his front office, are now in-charge and must deliver.

How betting market trends show fan attention across baseball and other sports

Betting market activity can provide insight into the levels of fan attention and engagement for baseball games compared with other sports. By observing factors such as volume, odds movement, and market timing, it is possible to examine the connection between fan interest and betting activity, particularly with examples involving the Nationals as well as international leagues. While not a perfect measure, analyzing these trends helps clarify patterns in how fans follow different sporting events.

The Nats sign Zack Littell pending a physical

Photo by Marlene Koenig for TalkNats

Remember when we sourced a week ago that President of Baseball Operations, Paul Toboni, “did not spend anywhere close to his entire budget.” Well, the team just signed RHP Zack Littell to a new deal per ESPN’s Jeff Passan. We confirmed that news, and the deal is subject to passing a physical. Jon Heyman of the NY Post reports this is a one-year deal with a mutual option. Dollar figures have not been disclosed at this time, but expect it to be heavy in incentives.

Spring Training Game #15 Nats on a Sunday afternoon!

The Washington Nationals hosted the New York Yankees last night in a stadium sell-out, even though the Yankees didn’t exactly bring starters with them per league requirements. Maybe there is an exception when the World Baseball Classic is in session. The Nats sealed the win when James Wood put it away with a 2-run triple for a 3-0 winner.

Manager Blake Butera continued to bring in top prospects for a taste of big league camp. Last night was Gavin Fien‘s turn. Not only did he catch the ceremonial first pitch (and the ceremonial second pitch too), he got to pinch-hit in the 8th inning and almost snuck a hard grounder down the right field line that was knocked down, and he was out by a couple of feet. What a feat it was to get on that field as a teenager. Fien was the 57th organizational player to get a plate appearance for the Nats in this Spring Training so far!

Spring Training Game #14 Nats & Yankees

The Washington Nationals have a big game against the mighty New York Yankees for a Spring Training night game. The team is 6-4 with three ties so far through the first 13 games. Throw in the 5-1 win against Venezuela’s WBC team, and they are 7-4. Josiah Gray starts this game, and a source tells us that several top prospects will sub in later for this game.

Spring Training Game #13 Nats and Cavalli

The Washington Nationals only wish that Spring Training W/L records counted at this point. The team is 6-3 with three ties so far through the first 12 games. Throw in the 5-1 win against Venezuela’s WBC team, and they are 7-3. Dream big because the Nats start to the regular season begins in Wrigley Field against the Cubs, then they face the Phillies, and the Dodgers for their first three series. Talk about a tough schedule to start 2026, and we still don’t know who will be he Nats’ Opening Day starting pitcher.
