Game #24 Nats face a lefty to complete this series

The Washington Nationals have another chance to do something special today and sweep a series for the first time since August 2021. Yes, another chance. The Nats had taken the first two games from the Minnesota Twins last week, but could not complete the sweep on Sunday. Now, the Nats get another bite at the apple against the New York Mets. The last time the Nats swept a 3-game series was in July 2021 before that infamous trade deadline. After another great pitching performance from MacKenzie Gore, the team showed up big last night for another quality win.

So tonight, it is Trevor Williams turn on the mound, and he faces the team he was with just six months ago before he headed to free agency and signed his two-year deal with the Nats. The Mets will have lefty Joey Lucchesi on the mound, and Nats’ manager Dave Martinez will go with two more right-handers in there for this game with just CJ Abrams hitting from the left-side.

“Yeah, I just wanted to give them a day off. We got back-to-back lefties, but it’s more for Luis. … He’s been playing every day, so I just wanted to give him a day. Then a long train ride tonight, but ultimately he’s got to be available to play sometime today too, as well.”

The Nats starters ERAs are a combined 4.34, and it has been incredible to see the recent successes go back eight starts as this pitching staff is nearly Top-10 overall.

Here is how they rank:

No. 5 Starter: Chad Kuhl 7.36 ERA
No. 4 Starter: Patrick Corbin 5.88
No. 3 Starter: Trevor Williams 3.38
No. 2 Starter: MacKenzie Gore 3.00
No. 1 Starter: Josiah Gray 2.93

On the Nats schedule, Tuesday began that stretch of 16 straight days without a day-off until May 11. We will see how Davey puts together his bullpen for this game. Is Mason Thompson available? Everyone else should be available even though Hunter Harvey pitched 1 2/3 innings yesterday.
