Nats Prospects: Nats top ranked prospect James Wood collects first hit of 2023 season on Saturday

On Saturday, James Wood collected his first hit of the 2023 season in game one of the Wilmington Blue Rocks doubleheader. It will undoubtably be the first of many for the Top-10 prospect in all of baseball.

Wood went one-for-five with one run, and three RBIs with a stolen base combined in the Blue Rocks doubleheader against Aberdeen. It is just a small sample size in his first nine at-bats in High-A baseball. His combined 2022 season with a .313/.420/.536 slash and a .956 was tremendous, and he flashed his five tools prominently.

In high school, the Boras client for some reason went from a pre-draft 15th overall pick and slid deep into the second round and picked by the Padres at No. 62. Wood still got paid first round money, and the IMG Academy star out of high school raked in his short time in the ACL after he signed. Wood would come over to the Nats in the blockbuster Juan Soto trade.

Wilmington split the doubleheader with Aberdeen losing game one 8-2 and winning game two in extra innings 8-4, and they will open a six-game series against Hickory (Texas) on April 11. All games except for Sunday will start at 6:35 pm. Sunday’s series finale contest will start at 1:05 pm.
