Game #29 is another opportunity for Josiah Gray

The Washington Nationals have their best starting pitcher, statistically speaking, on the mound tonight in Anaheim. Josiah Gray (3-2) enters with a 3.12 ERA in his sixth start of the season.

Last night, the Nats dropped the first game of the series in their second shutout of the season. It was the same ole story of poor situation hitting and hitting into more bad luck. The Angels had a spot starter last night who seemed ripe for the pickins’ and it was the Nats who got the rotten fruit in the end.

Nats’ manager Dave Martinez will once again shake up his lineup. Alcides Escobar is back on the bench, and Dee Strange-Gordon will get the start at shortstop. Also, Yadiel Hernandez is back in the starting lineup.

Today was Kentucky Derby Day, and with this late Saturday start, the players were able to watch the second greatest upset in Derby history as Rich Strike won. There is certainly a parallel to the 19-31 Nats of the 2019 season. Don’t think this moment wasn’t a teachable one for the Nats’ manager on never counting out his teams — or at least until they are mathematically eliminated.
