Jeremy De La Rosa Steals the Show in Sunday’s MiLB Recap

On Sunday afternoon, the minor league teams played the final game of their respective series. The FredNats are winning their series 3-2 and will try to secure the series win while also extending their first-place lead. The Blue Rocks are looking to salvage a game in their home series against the Renegades. Matt Merrill is on the mound to start a winning streak. The Senators are losing their series against the Yard Goats. With a win today they could tie the series and challenge the Flying Squirrels league lead. In Rochester, the Red Wings are one game back in the standings and they have Sterling Sharp on the bump to try and change that. The Wings are 3-2 in their series against the Syracuse Mets entering today.

Class-A Fredericksburg “FredNats” Nationals

Andry Lara was on the bump in Fredericksburg and although he struck out eight RiverDog batters, he also got knocked around for seven hits and four runs in five innings. In their four innings, the bullpen wasn’t great either. Peyton Glavine walked four in 1 2/3, but managed to only give up one run. The Goliath FredNats offense was dead through the first six innings today, managing only one hit in that time. Heading into the 7th the FredNats were down 5-0, but then the offense showed life. Drew Millas got it started with a leadoff single, then two batters later Jeremy De La Rosa hit a towering home run to right field, his fourth of the season, to make it a three-run ball game. Sammy Infante worked a walk, advanced to second on a walk, and scored on a Steven Williams single to make it 5-3. There’s nothing like some two-out magic from a young lineup. The FredNats were unable to get anything going in the bottom of the 9th and they fell 5-3. A bright spot in the FredNats bullpen has been hard-throwing southpaw, Jose Ferrer. With his scoreless outing today, he’s tossed 10 innings with no walks, no runs, and only three hits.

High-A Wilmington Blue Rocks

It was a bullpen game in Hudson Valley as Matt Merrill could only make it through four innings before getting yanked. Carlos Romero and Zach Brzykcy headlined the reliever efforts as they both had two strikeouts and the ladder recorded the save. Drew Mendoza lead the charge on offense with two hits and three RBIs including the go-ahead via a triple in the top of the 9th. Omar Meregildo, Kevin Strohschein, and Jeremy Ydens all recorded two hits as well and the Rocks won 8-6.

Double-A Harrisburg Senators

The Senators only scored two for Evan Lee today, both from solo home runs. Dondrei Hubbard, a minor league signee in March, hit his first home run of the year in what was his first game of the year! The other long ball was hit by Jake Alu who now has three bombs in his last four games. Evan Lee turned in another solid outing giving up one run on two hits, two walks, and two strikeouts in five innings. The top prospect left-handed pitcher hasn’t been the cleanest, but he minimizes damage and gets the job done in the end. The game went into extras tied 2-2. In the 10th, Alberto Guerrero would allow the extra-inning ghost runner to score and the Sens offense wouldn’t respond in the bottom half. It was a gut wrenching loss for Harrisburg, 3-2.

Triple-A Rochester Red Wings

Sterling Sharp was terrific against the Syracuse Mets today. He went five innings of two-run ball with five punch-outs and no walks. Sharp is a former Rule-5 draft pick who was returned to the Nats following a year with the Miami Marlins. Despite an 0-4 from Luis García, the Red Wings offense was lively. Donovan Casey singled home a run in the second to cut the lead to one, then Tres Barrera took the lead with a two-run triple. A Dee Strange-Gordon double and a Nick Banks home run extended the lead in the fourth and that’s all the Wings would need for am 8-3 win.

Farm System final notes 🎶

A few tough losses tonight, but also some bright spots. Evan Lee and Jeremy De La Rosa were our stars of the minors, and honorable mention to Josiah Gray and Lucius Fox on the big league team. Tomorrow is the universal off day, so expect the updated stat leaderboards!
