Smile Davey, it’s your birthday! He is 56 years young today, and was rewarded with a multi-year contract, exact terms undisclosed.

“Three years ago when we selected Davey to be our Manager, he made a promise to our fans that he would bring a World Championship back to Washington, D.C.,” Nats’ principal owner Mark Lerner wrote. “There was never any doubt in my mind that he would make that dream a reality. Davey’s determination and unwavering support of his players is admirable. We are so fortunate to have him leading our clubhouse each and every day.”

“I can’t say enough about Davey’s leadership qualities and the poise he shows under pressure,” said general manager Mike Rizzo. “The players, coaches and staff have the utmost respect for him as a manager and a person. There is no one else our team would rather have at the helm. I look forward to our continued partnership as we work together to bring another World Series Championship to our fans.”

With yesterday’s rainout, we get a reconfigured rotation change for the Mets and a marquee matchup for this first game of the doubleheader with Max Scherzer going up against Jacob deGrom of the Mets. Since 2016, those are the only two Cy Young winners in the NL. Scherzer won it in 2016 and 2017 and deGrom in 2018 and 2019. Of course Max has three in total as he also was the Cy in 2013. Max will once again try to secure win 175 in his great career.

This will be a 7-inning game, and you can expect both aces to try to push for the complete game especially considering that the Mets will almost certainly be eliminated today – win or lose and the Nats offseason officially starts after last out recorded tomorrow.

So far in this season, the Nationals lead the NL in fewest offensive strikeouts and currently are at 424 K’s, and have a chance to finish the best in the Majors.

Davey Martinez is going with a lineup of mostly bench players for this one. The only projected starters are Yan Gomes, Trea Turner, Victor Robles and Juan Soto in this one, and that is kind of what you would expect given how the team wants to give an extended look to Andrew Stevenson, Yadiel Hernandez, and Luis Garcia as well as potential bench players for next year like Brock Holt and Josh Harrison.
