Game #87 The Royals are in Washington, D.C. to play the Nationals!

The Royals are in town to face the Washington Nationals in an inter-league three game weekend series to take us to All-Star break. This is manager Dave Martinez‘s chance to put the pressure on the rest of the NL East teams as well as the potential Wild Card teams. Everything the Nationals have done for the last six weeks to put themselves in a position to climb up the standings is an everyday thing. As Martinez says, the team takes it one game at a time. He is right that you should not look ahead and need to concentrate on the task at-hand.

For Martinez’s squad, Austin Voth is back on the mound after his abbreviated outing five days ago in Detroit where he only lasted 4 1/3 innings. Voth was doing well for three innings then struggled in the fourth and to start the fifth inning. Voth was charged with three earned runs, and the key tonight is for his pitching coach Paul Menhart to monitor his stamina. In Voth’s debut start on June 23rd, he was pitching on nine days rest. In his last start, he was on five days rest, and today on regular rest of four days.

Starting for the Royals is the right-handed Brad Keller who struggled quite a bit recently. In Keller’s last start, he gave up six runs over only five innings against Toronto. Keller is 23 years old and has 59 games pitched in his career. He is far behind his career stats as his WHIP is up to 1.42 this season and his ERA is at 4.63.

For Davey’s squad tonight, he is giving Ryan Zimmerman another start after he looked much better at the plate  yesterday. Adam Eaton is back in the lineup, and Gerardo Parra will give Victor Robles the night off.

The Scherzer’s gave birth to their daughter yesterday. Details in the Tweet, and a congratulations to them! Max plans on starting tomorrow and will return from his paternity leave.
