The Matt’s give it up in the 8th and blow 3-run lead; Nats lose in 10th

The fantastic efforts of Tanner Roark, Enny Romero and Jayson Werth were wasted today. Roark threw a gem over 6 innings giving up 2 unearned runs that scored after a fielding error and departed the game with a 5-2 lead. Jayson Werth had 2 home runs, a double and a single today to lead the offense.

Matt Grace pitched a scoreless 7th inning, but then Dusty Baker put him back out there for the 8th inning. Grace’s history which is limited had him before this year with only more than 1 inning once back on May 14th of 2015 when he came in for mop-up work when the Nats were behind by 5 runs. Grace gave up 2 consecutive singles in the 8th inning and was approaching 30 pitches. Dusty Baker called in Matt Albers who threw a hanging slider on the first pitch, and pinch-hitter Aaron Altherr deposited the pitch deep into the leftfield bleachers for a game tying 3-run home run.

Enny Romero kept the game tied with bases loaded and one out in the 9th inning as he worked a strikeout and a flyout to push the game into extra innings.

Blake Treinen came into the game in the bottom of the 10th and the lead-off batter dribbled a groundball down the 3rd base line for a leadoff double and then it just unraveled from there until the winning run scored on a sacrifice fly for the Phillies walk-off.
