Nats sweep the D’Backs: Postgame

The Nationals swept the three-game series from the Diamondbacks, and the Nats head home with a 6-3 road trip in the books.

To add to a good day, the Cubs swept the Marlins to give the Nats a 7 game cushion in the NL East with 54 games remaining in the regular season.

Max Scherzer pitched a good game striking out 11 in 8 innings with 3 earned runs. Mark Melancon was warming up in the top of the 9th in a 4-3 game figuring to make his first save, and when the Nats scored 4 runs with 2 outs in the top of the 9th Melancon pitched with a 8-3 lead to close the game out.

The Nationals offense was helped by a 451 foot blast from Trea Turner and another home run from Daniel Murphy. Every starter had at least one hit today and perhaps the biggest hit was Scherzer’s 2-run single with bases loaded and 2 outs.
