A 0-0 game changes as the sun monster changes the direction: Postgame

You just never know in sports what will happen on any given Sunday.  Joe Ross was ready to put up a zero when the sun shined in Stephen Drew’s eyes to score 2 runs on what would have been the 3rd out on a routine infield pop-up. That made the score 2-0.

The Nats got one back on an outfield collision play that resulted in an inside-the-park-HR by Ryan Zimmerman to make the score 2-1. In perhaps the biggest play of the game, Bryce Harper was up with 2 runners on base and he sliced a liner to shallow LF and out of nowhere Christian Yelich dove for the ball and caught. If he missed it, Ben Revere would have scored from 1st base, and Drew of course from 2nd base.  At the top of the next inning, the Marlins scored 3 runs to widen their margin to 5-1.

Jose Fernandez pitched well and struck out 11 on his 7th inning outing as he threw 117 pitches and 75 for strikes. Joe Ross looked almost equally as good until he hit the wall in the 6th inning.

The 9th inning would be exciting as Danny Espinosa led off the 9th with a single and Stephen Drew worked a walk. Michael Taylor fouled out in a situation where he didn’t pinch-hit in that spot with Murphy  on the bench. Revere struck out on a 3-2 pitch. Dusty Baker ended up using Murphy for Rendon as a pinch-hitter and he flew out to end the game.

Tomorrow is a day off.
